Design notes

To add an element of sophistication to what could easily appear to be just another fashion catalogue, I took inspiration from the surrealism of René Magritte and Giorgio de Chirico, whose paintings turn ordinary objects and scenes into disquieting affairs. This Verfremdungseffekt, the making strange of everyday objects, was the visual approach for the whole issue, which was shot in various locations in Singapore and Manila. Leather bags sit beside vegetables, luxury watches are strapped onto an animal skull, disembodied hands lift clothing into the air, spheres and bottles interact with items at random, tiny rooms play with perspective and scale. Drapery, a classic surrealist motif, is used consistently throughout the pages. Typography is kept discreet to maintain focus on the dreamlike imagery.
