About the book

This novel begins with a proposition: love has a quota, and among those who fall in love, only one out of five will end up happy. A narrative tackling love's various facets and intricacies, stringing together five disparate stories into one manuscript.

Design notes

The book is the author’s first novel, and his first literary endeavor after years of acclaim for his screenwriting. I was closely involved in this project, from brainstorming to reading early drafts to designing the book for print. From the cover to the inside pages, I used handwritten type all over the book to evoke the feel of a writer’s manuscript, and to give it a more personal/ized impression. A small size was chosen to make it more handy. Bright colors in subdued tones create a younger look without alienating the author’s older generation of serious Filipiniana readers.

“I am a messy writer. I like to cross boundaries. I hate being boxed. Linear narrative seldom attracts me. The challenge always is how to find my bearings when I get lost. In all these, Karl serves as a compass.”
